For a long time, biological maps of the human body focused on distinct organs and systems; heart, lungs, muscles, bones. As time and science progressed add ligaments, tendons, nervous system, lymphatic system and my favourite; Fascia!
But recent scientific discoveries have brought to light a fascinating ‘new’ structure: the “interstitium”.

I KNEW IT! In my passionate madness I have ‘spoken/heard’ and felt this ‘something else, this magic electrical and communitive pulse. I just had no idea what it’s called… if it was real or if it was just my own delusions. Definitely not saying I discovered it and was just slow to the naming party. I believe it’s ancient and the art of massage has ‘known’ it for eon. We all know it, inherently… ancestrally…

Imagine it not as a solid organ, but as a vast, interconnected network of fluid-filled spaces that permeate nearly every tissue throughout your body.

Functionally, it’s essentially an intricate web of collagen and elastin fibers, creating channels and compartments filled with interstitial fluid..(Well they say it’s fluid… I’m still not sold on the exact state of the matter within it; but for me it’s plasma)

These spaces are found just beneath the skin, lining organs, surrounding arteries and veins. Within the fascia between muscles. It’s truly pervasive, acting as a dynamic, living cushion that allows tissues to move and stretch without tearing. Amoung other things!! Which I would love to express my thoughts and experience on; but alas, self doubt and imposter syndrome can be the allies I need to remain credible.

Its discovery significantly reshapes our understanding of anatomy and physiology. It highlights that the body isn’t just a collection of distinct parts, but a profoundly integrated system where fluid, nutrients and waste are constantly in motion through this hidden highway.

Recognizing the interstitium’s omnipresence is akin to acknowledging a fundamental, often unseen, substrate that profoundly influences how other bodily phenomena manifest.

Yay Science! Well done!

(My true expression of excitement about science finally recognizing this system, will be in one of those personal, pay-to-read-blogs. lol)
